Four Levels of Desire/Happiness

4. Ultimate or Unconditional Purpose
Objective: Seek and live in ultimate Truth, Love, Goodness, Justice, and Being (Platonic transcendentals)
Characteristics: Seeking the unconditional, unretricted, perfect, eternal in above transcendentals. Can come from pursuit of transcendentals or faith/God religion. Optimal pervasiveness, endurance,, and depth.
3. Contributive (Ego-out)
Objective: Optimize positive difference in the world. (The world is better off for my having lived.) Comes from “doing for” and “being with.”
Characteristic: More pervasive (positive effects beyond self), enduring (lasts longer), and deep (using highest creative and psychological powers). Can come from generosity, magnanimity, altruism, love.
2. Comparative (Ego-in)
Objective: Shift locus of control to self (ego) and gain comparative advantage in status, esteem, power, control, winning, and success.
Characteristics: Intense ego gratification ( sense of progress, superiority, and esteemability. If dominant, then fear of failure, ego-sensitivity, ego blame/rage, self-pity, inferiority, swuspicion, resentment.
1. Physical/External Stimulus
Objective: The pleasure or material object itself (nothing beyond this)

Characteristics: Immediate gratification, surface apparent, and intensity of stimulus. No desire for common, intrinsic, or ultimate good.
